As COVID-19 infection rates continue to rise, mask mandates and guidelines have been updated. With new strain, Omicron, professionals report that the transmission rate has increased and the commonly used cloth-based face masks are no longer adequate protection against COVID-19 infection. The reality is that face masks aren’t going away anytime soon and the type of face mask worn makes a difference in protection against the virus. As a result, here are a few factors to consider as we continue to invest in face masks for protection against COVID-19.

Masks should..

-function like a respirator and filter air particles that you breathe. Top-grade masks like N95 or K95 are respirator masks recommended by the CDC.

-be made from several layers of tightly woven fabric. A single layer of fabric like a scarf, bandana or cloth mask isn’t adequate protection against COVID-19.

-conform to the face comfortably. A loose fitting mask may compromise a mask’s effectiveness. Tips: Be mindful of the size of the mask and the fit of the straps. Also, a flexible nose bridge is helpful in preventing fogging of eyeglasses.

-stay in place and avoid slipping with movement of the mouth, like when talking.

-be worn consistently and appropriately. Avoid frequent touching and pulling of mask on and off face.

Beginning the end of January, the Biden administration will make N95 masks accessible to US residents. “To ensure broad access for all Americans, there will be three masks per person”, according to the White House (2022). You will be able to access N95 masks at pharmacies and community health centers that have partnered with the Federal COVID-19 vaccination campaign.
