Maintaining Healthy Hair At-Home

With many of us home bound due to a global pandemic (COVID-19), we find ourselves going back to basics and relying on DIY care. As a result, September Set tapped into the knowledge learned from expert, Ashleigh Taylor (owner of Taylor and York Salon in DC), for DIY hair care tips to ensure healthy lux hair at-home as the temperature drops with the transition to Fall.

To address the impacts of moisture loss during the colder seasons, Ashleigh recommends the following:

·      A good old fashion oil treatment is always good.

Oil treatments can be done at home by first washing the hair once to remove build-up, then towel dry and dousing the hair with extra virgin olive oil, covering with a shower cap and letting the hair sit with the cap on for 30 minutes or 15 minutes under a hooded hair dryer and then shampooing to remove the excess oil and condition.  This process can be done every 3 weeks.

Cleansing conditioners work wonders.

Somewhat like a co-wash but with more cleansing properties. Imagine your best deep conditioner and shampoo all mixed in one. It’s low in suds production and high in hydration which is great to infuse more moisture.

For an irritated and flaky scalp, Ashleigh’s other home remedies include:

o   Applying a clay mask, such as Aztec clay, to the scalp and let harden and then rinse

o   Lavender and peppermint oils can be used by applying on the scalp to alleviate an itchy and irritated scalp
